Nicholas Shoof letter : San Francisco, Calif., to Dr. Joseph Pownall, ALS, 1856 May 20.

Describing the death of Mr. King and the civil order kept in San Francisco by the 2nd Vigilance Committee. Shoof expects Casey and Cora, who were charged with the shooting, to be hung. He is awaiting passage on the steamship, John L. Stephens, which was held up for repairs.

Dr. Joseph Pownall made an overland journey from Louisiana to California seeking gold in 1849. After working the Mariposa diggings, he went to Columbia in 1852 and bought stock in the Tuolumne County Water Company, where he served as a company officer until his death. Dr. Pownall married Mary C. Harrison Newall, the widow of William Henry Newell, who had been one of the founders of the Tuolumne County Water Company in 1851.
